Who's the daddy?

Who’s the Daddy? We aim to find out. This year 30 of the best jumpers in Europe will compete for the title of UK Pro BASE Daddy 2008.

One of the key skills for a BASE jumper is the ability to land in small, rough, congested areas after a very short parachute ride. We will test this skill by positioning a target somewhere in the landing zone, with a “bullseye” the size of a tennis-ball, and see who can land on it. Jumpers will be helped by perfect parachute packing and exit skills (this will increase flight and reaction time) and the most consistent jumper will shine through after 3 separate weekends of jumping. With the series to run through July, August and September only the best of the best will prove themselves in the changing wind and weather, from different jump platforms and in differing venues. Each weekend will run as a stand-alone event, with results, prizes and kudos for the winners as we progress. All the scores will accumulate, culminating in the finale at the Ecotricity wind turbine in Swaffham, Norfolk, in September. Only at the end of that weekend will we really know "Who’s the Daddy?" 2008!

Round 1: Bedford River Festival, 12/13th July 2008.

We return to Bedford for the opening round of the competition. We’ll power up the monster NMT crane to it’s full 90 metres (300 feet) height and jump the weekend away. This great public festival attracted 300,000 visitors in 2006, making it the second largest, free outdoor event in the UK. With our own dedicated arena we will provide far-reaching visual entertainment during 2 days of competition and display jumping, and we’ll crown our first winners.

Round 2: Go Fast! "Where's the beach?" Boogie - Keeley Grren, 15/16/17th August 2008.

Another excursion for the monster crane, returning to the venue of last year's crane boogie. As well as the second round of the competition, we have also added an extra day to the event, allowing the event to be opened up less experienced jumpers and enabling them to learn from the wealth of knowledge that will be present.

Round 3: Swaffham 1 and 2, Norfolk, 27th/28th September 2008.

At the Ecotricity visitors centre in Swaffham in Norfolk, we find a unique structure. One of the most efficient sources of renewable energy in the UK, with a twist. And how tall is this super-green wind turbine? Tall enough to parachute off! Unlike skydivers, BASE jumpers don’t burn fossil fuels running aircraft to pursue their sport. I guess we’d take the elevator if there is one, but mostly it’s leg power and sweat to get to the exit point for our jump. But, as environmentally friendly as we appear, we are but children alongside Ecotricity. Ecotricity are really showing how it can be in the field of renewable energy, and we are delighted to be working with them at this, the final round of the 2008 series. With Swaffham 1 being the only turbine in the UK with a publicly-accessible viewing gallery at the top, a close-up view of the action is guaranteed for those lucky enough to experience it. After a 300 step climb you will see the jumpers fall past the windows in front of you as they make the 60 metre (200 feet) jump to the target below. With jumping also from the taller Swaffham 2 turbine, we will test our competitors and find the Ecotricity Champion and the overall UK Pro BASE Daddy 2008.
