The weekend of the 27th and 28th September saw the climax to the
Who's The Daddy series with round 3 taking place off a wind turbine
in Norfolk. Again, the weather was fantastic with low winds and blue
sunshine. Ecotricity are one of a new breed of energy companies who
believe in a strategy of renewal power generation. UK Pro BASE were
only too happy to raise their profile by jumping off their 200ft
wind turbines in Swaffham and West Somerton.
So on Saturday morning the competition began. Small groups began to climb the circular staircase which took them to the viewing gallery just below the hub of the wind turbine. From there competitors started to make static-line jumps aiming for the 6m wide target. Craig Poxon was the first to jump and scored a fantastic 5 points. Fortunately the camera crews were there in the morning and this footage made its way on to TV bulletins all around the world. Not long afterwards, Johan Vervoort scored the first dead center. It was obvious that everyone was warming up slowly, because come the beginning of round 2, the scores came in thick and fast.
Unfortunately there was one small accident by Steve Moore who landed awkwardly after a minor rigging error. He went to hospital shortly afterwards and it was discovered that he had a metatarsal injury. It will not be long before he is jumping again.
Max
(competition director) had announced from the beginning of the
weekend that the best 4 rounds would go forward as they had in the
previous events. In the following jumps, Johan and Douggs did more
dead centers. So the fight for 3rd place was on with main contenders
being Adam Lanes and Simon Brentford.
Simon Brentford, Richard Lee and Adam Lanes all took 3 points each. Johan and Douggs started to battle it out at the top with scores of 5 and 10 respectively. For most competitors, a dead center would seal a position in the top 3. However, great progress had been made over the summer. Simon clinched third place with his first dead center of the series with Adam finishing only 4 points behind.

However, this was not the end of the weekend. On Sunday all the jumpers went to another wind turbine near Great Yarmouth some 50 miles away. The landing area was completely clear of hazards with the wind direction and this meant that some jumpers decided to freefall the 215ft exit height. What made this jump interesting was the exit in that jumpers had to leap from a sloping exit. Everyone did well despite this and the event was wrapped up nicely by Max and Dave in the afternoon. Many thanks goes to Ecotricity and the Height Works rope access team who supported this first of a kind event.
